COSMOS Arles Books 017
EDITION 3 - Temporary structure
Cosmos Arles Books is a satellite space of the Rencontres D'Arles taking place during the opening week of the festival, between the 3rd and 8th of July.
Invited by the festival to join the official program in 2015, Cosmos, which was founded in 2009 by Olivier Cablat and Sebastian Hau in 2009, has been a laboratory of expressions and practices in contemporary photography, publishing and visual arts. It celebrates multiplicity and singularity within those practices, with a special interest in books and publishing, which we consider to be one of the main mediums of independent production within photography since at least fifteen years.
Cosmos was created based on the idea that photography will not easily find durable ways of existing if it's means of diffusion are constantly separated. From our first edition we showed photography on the walls, as well in it's printed form via photobooks and magazines and created an open space for artists performing photography in experimental ways. Our first space was a former supermarket, we then moved on to a former insurance offices, the offices of a syndicate, a bullfighters club, a former train repair hall, and for two years now we have been in the space of the former collège Mistral.
As in the most contemporary practices in photography we have adapted ourselves to the support available without this changing the identity of our propositions.
It is the essence of an event as ours that it has to adapt itself to the environment available, but it is also our challenge in the present and future to know how to transform content, it's medium and curatorial practice within the structures at hand and a shifting environment.
For it's ninth edition will promote a wide selection of contemporary photography, from traditional photobooks to the most ephemeral publications. Our desire is to create a platform for practitioners, the enthusiastic public and experts, a place for exchanging views and discussing publishing, books and photography.
We will be hosting numerous publishers from France and all over the world, experiments in publishing, conferences, pop-up's and book signings, a multitude of events around the photobook. We are preparing a number of ephemeral exhibitions, the third edition of the PDF-award, and a collaborative project, open to the public, « CAts, CArs and CAthedrals".
In short we believe every visitor is a participant in the adventure of redefining photography!
